Regional background 45th latitude of the north divides Krasnodar region by equal halves from the north pole to the equator.
The valleys on the territory of Krasnodar make 83,6 thousand km2 and consist of Kubano-Pre-Azov lowland, Pre-Kuban slopy valley, Stavropol upland, ridges and lowlands of Taman peninsular with a part of Kuban river estuary. They make up 71 %, 59 thousand km2 of the Krasnodar region.
The highest part of Kuban - a system of the main and foremost crests.
The most notable Caucasian peaks of more then 3 000 m are here. They are about 60 in number. To the north of Foremost Crest a so called Hilly crest starts near Lagonaki plateau.
The unigue geographical positioning had made the north Caucasus the road of nations, ancient and modern ones.
Another name of our region is Kuban, after the name of the longest river flowing from the mount Elbrus.
Starting from 1792, according to the order of the Great Empress Catherine the Great the kosaks came down to inhabit the land and prosper.
