Novorossiysk

The sity of Novorossiysk is founded on the 12^th of September, 1838 on the coast of the deepest for Black sea, non-freezing  Tsemesskaya bay. The foundation of the city is directly connected with the victory of Russia in the Russian-Turkish war, 1828-1829.

During 169 years of its existence the city was destroyed three times. It was during two wars that it was totally erased. It went through the greatest grief during the Great Patriotic War: the heroic defence of Novorossiysk lasted for 255 days. Its inhabitants were either taken away or killed by occupants, the city being erased from the surface. On the 16^th of September, 1943, Novorossiysk was freed from German-fascist invaders.

For its persistence, courage and military deeds during the Great patriotic War the city was awarded by the military medal of the Patriotic war, 1^st degree. On the 14^th of 1973 Novossiysk was awarded the name of “City-the hero”.

Novorossiysk is one of the largest industrial centres, an important Black sea-port in the south of Russia.
